Keeping Pets Safe on Fourth of July

June 19, 2026 | Published by hvanderzee

Love them or hate them, fireworks are here to stay.

Unfortunately, our pets often don’t share our enthusiasm for booming skies and flashing lights. In fact, many dogs and cats become extremely frightened during the Independence Day holiday.  Animal shelters and animal control agencies report a 30–60% increase in lost pets, where the dog ran away from fireworks, between July 4th and July 6th each year. Sadly only about 14% of lost pets are reunited with their families.

The combination of fireworks, outdoor gatherings, open doors, and unfamiliar guests can create the perfect conditions for a frightened pet to escape.

So what can you do to help keep your pet safe and comfortable?

1. Create a Safe Space

Secure your home and eliminate potential escape routes. Allow your pet access to areas where they feel most comfortable and safe. A quiet room, covered crate, or enclosed space with familiar blankets and toys can provide comfort during periods of loud noise. There are also some vests or thundershirts for dogs that can help.

2. Use Calming Pheromones

Calming pheromone sprays and diffusers are available for both dogs and cats. These products can help reduce anxiety and create a more relaxing environment during stressful events.

3. Mask the Noise

Play soft music, white noise, or turn on a television to help drown out the sounds of fireworks. Closing windows and curtains can also help reduce noise and minimize flashes of light.

4. Talk to Your Veterinarian

Many pets benefit from anti-anxiety medications or dog calming treats that can be used during the holiday season.  Medications like gabapentin for dogs, or cats can be prescribed. Trazodone is another possible medication for pets. If your pet has a history of fear or anxiety associated with loud noises, partner with your veterinarian ahead of time to develop a plan that works best for your pet.

5. Verify Identification and Microchips

Even with the best preparation, accidents can happen. Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with an up-to-date identification tag and verify that their microchip registration contains your current contact information.

If you’re hosting or attending July 4th festivities, be extra vigilant with your pets. Even the most well-behaved animals can panic and bolt when startled.

Preparation is the key to keeping your pet calm, happy, and safe this holiday season.
